Board says no to a school prayer and Bible-reading period

What happened
A new state law, Senate Bill 11, made boards vote on whether to set aside time for prayer and Bible reading. On February 19, 2026, the Roma ISD board voted 6-0 against it. One absent member did not vote.
Why it matters to families
No prayer or Bible-reading period will be added to the school day. Trustees said students can already pray, read or have a moment of silence on their own. Staff said the board could take up the question again later.
The evidence
The official February 19, 2026 recording shows the presentation on the Senate Bill 11 resolution. It also shows a motion 'to decline an adoption of any resolution for a period of prayer and reading the Bible', which passed 6 in favor, none opposed, one absent. It is based on auto-generated captions.
