SFUSD weighs new student-assignment models as seat shortages complicate planning

What happened
SFUSD reviewed three still-open models for a districtwide student-assignment system, with board direction expected Oct. 13 and a final policy slated for April 2027 for use beginning fall 2028. The options range from a seat at one of 3–5 schools in a zone to a guaranteed neighborhood-school seat, including for late applicants; staff projected shortages in 20 of 58 attendance areas and said filling them could require changing 2–3 K–8/citywide programs or reducing or relocating 4–8 language pathways.
Why it matters to families
The model will determine families’ assignment guarantees and where they can apply. Addressing the projected seat gaps could also change which schools offer neighborhood seats and where language-program seats are located; no model or specific program changes were decided at this study session.
The evidence
In the Oct. 6 study session, staff described the three models as still under consideration and said board direction was sought for Oct. 13, with final policy adoption planned for April 2027 and use for August 2028 enrollment (about 00:40:22–00:43:36). Staff projected some shortage in 20 of 58 attendance areas, including shortages greater than 10 seats in 12, and said neighborhood models could require changing 2–3 K–8/citywide schools or reducing or relocating 4–8 language pathways (about 00:58:52–01:03:38).
