SFUSD votes to replace elementary-school lottery with neighborhood assignments

What happened
The Board voted 5–2 to develop a system that guarantees elementary students a neighborhood-school seat while preserving access to citywide programs. It would replace the current lottery for students entering in 2028–29. The detailed policy still needs a final vote, scheduled for April 2027.
Why it matters to families
Families could be assigned a place at their neighborhood school—including if they apply late—instead of relying on the lottery for a school seat. The change could reshape how elementary families choose schools, but the board has not yet settled the policy details or implementation.
The evidence
At the October 13 meeting, the board approved the Option C resolution 5–2. The superintendent described Option C as guaranteeing every family a seat close to home, including late applicants, while retaining citywide programs and choice. She said the board was deciding a direction, not a final policy; the final policy was planned for April, with the new system expected to take effect for students enrolling in 2028–29. In discussion, board members distinguished Option C's neighborhood assignment regardless of application timing from Option B's neighborhood guarantee for families who apply on time.
