Board reviews new policy shielding immigrant students
What happened
A new Policy 5120 was posted for first review in August 2026. It follows New York Education Law 3201-b, which took effect May 27, 2026.
Why it matters to families
It would bar school staff from helping immigration agents reach students or non-public areas without a federal judicial warrant, and bar asking about immigration status. Staff must also keep a student at school if a parent is detained.
The evidence
The posted draft lists a required staff contact, limits on sharing student information, and says civil immigration warrants and detainers do not allow access to school property. It is a proposal; adoption is not shown in collected records.
