Budget cuts an elementary teacher and the school librarian

Financial

What happened

On June 2, 2026 the board approved the 2026-27 budget. It removes one elementary teaching job, so some grades will be combined. It does not refill the librarian and distance-education job, and it skips the Close Up trip for one year to save $40,000.

Why it matters to families

Combined grades mean some elementary students will share a classroom and teacher with another grade. Without a school librarian, elementary teachers will run library check-in and check-out, and front-office and high school staff will manage online classes. The board said falling enrollment and limited state and town money forced the cuts.

The evidence

The June 2, 2026 minutes record the 4-0 vote on the FY2027 budget and the superintendent's list of changes: combining grade levels after a teacher left, not rehiring the librarian/distance education coordinator, pausing Close Up until 2028, and a $25,000-$30,000 reduction tied to declining enrollment.
