Funding structure, how it compares to peers, and where major projects stand.

How is South Vermillion paid for, and where is it headed?

Shrinking enrollment, state per-student funding and a proposed move to one campus

Like other Indiana districts, South Vermillion gets most of its money from the state for each student it enrolls. Local property taxes pay for buildings, buses and debt. Enrollment has fallen for years, from 1,707 in 2017-18 to about 1,426 this fall, and the district's buildings are only about half full. To save money instead of renovating two old elementary schools, administrators are proposing one campus by 2029-30. The seven-member elected board has not voted on it yet.

2027 budget

Adopted September 21, 2026: $20,713,200 in total, with Education $12.72 million, Operations $5.35 million and Debt Service $2,643,200.

Savings cushion

On September 30, 2026, the Education fund held $2.50 million (18.74% of spending), and the Rainy Day fund held $347,948.

Leadership

Superintendent Dr. Micah Williams has led the district since July 2025. The 2026 board is led by President John Paul Roehm and Vice President Kelli Hill.

State funding per student

In January 2026, the state's basic per-student support was $7,754.11.

The one-campus plan is still a proposal. The district says taxes would stay level and no one would be laid off, but no binding cost estimate or bond has been approved.
