Central Elementary reading scores lag

Curriculum

What happened

On the state's third-grade reading test (IREAD), about 76.7% of Central Elementary students passed, compared with about 98.2% at Van Duyn. Central has added a 'double dose' of phonics using the Orton-Gillingham method and grouped students by reading level.

Why it matters to families

Third-grade reading is a key milestone. Students who do not pass IREAD get extra help and may retake the test.

The evidence

August 2026 minutes report IREAD pass rates of about 98.2% at Van Duyn and a lower rate at Central (about 76.7% per the August 17 recording). The October 22 recording describes Central's literacy changes.
