How is Summit School District paid for, and what changed this fall?

State formula plus a new local tax

Summit School District Re 1 runs nine schools in Summit County, Colorado. A seven-member elected Board of Education sets the budget and policy and meets on Thursday evenings, usually twice a month, in Frisco. Like other Colorado districts, it is paid mainly through the state school finance formula plus local property taxes. In November 2026 voters approved Ballot Issue 4A, a mill levy override that adds about $5.9 million a year starting in tax year 2027.

New local money

4A adds about $5.9 million a year: $4.5 million for staff pay, $1 million for academics and $400,000 for career classes.

Cost to owners

About $54.50 a year for a $500,000 home and $109 for a $1 million home, per the district.

Pressures

The district cites declining enrollment, aging buildings and rising operating costs.

Board

Seven members elected at Colorado's odd-year November coordinated election. The next is Nov. 2, 2027.

The district says more funding does not remove declining enrollment or long-term building needs. We did not collect a budget document, so spending totals are not shown here.
