What the county office does and who decides

A county office of education that mostly serves other districts, with a small set of its own schools and programs

The Sutter County Superintendent of Schools (SCSOS) supports the county's school districts with business oversight, special education, career training, adult education and student support. It also runs its own programs, such as Feather River Academy, Pathways Charter Academy and special education classes, and oversees county-authorized charters like AeroSTEM Academy. The elected county superintendent, Tom Reusser, runs the office. A five-member Sutter County Board of Education, elected by trustee area, approves the office budget, sets the superintendent's pay, and hears appeals of charter denials, expulsions and transfer denials.

Budget of about $59 million

The 2026-27 budget plans $58.6 million in revenue and $59.7 million in spending, using about $1.0 million of reserves.

Appeals body

The board is deciding an appeal from California Learning Academy after Yuba City Unified denied its charter petition.

Five elected trustees

Trustee Areas 3 and 4 have terms ending in 2026; Areas 1, 2 and 5 end in 2028.

New AI rules

Policy 0441, adopted July 2026, sets principles for staff and student use of AI tools.

Most decisions about classrooms in Sutter County are made by the local district boards, not this board. Its own meetings are often short and routine.
