Board expected to decide on armed school security guards

Day-to-day

What happened

The district says it is ready to start armed security if the board approves it, with a plan and training in place. The board's 2026-27 goals include finishing its study of armed security and voting on it. No vote has been taken in the records reviewed.

Why it matters to families

Armed guards would be a big change in every school building. Parents have spoken for and against at meetings. In January 2026 the district said a Civil Service rule change made hiring guards harder.

The evidence

The September 2026 Safety and Security Update says: 'Should the board authorize armed security we are ready to implement.' The 2026-27 Board Goals list a vote, and board members discussed deciding soon on September 16, 2026. The district's 2026 budget FAQ reports 2024-25 surveys: 82.8% of parents and 55% of staff favored arming guards.
