Who decides how much Tiverton's schools get?
Tiverton Public Schools is paid for by an appropriation from the Town of Tiverton plus Rhode Island state education aid, with some capital work funded from the town's gaming revenue. The School Committee builds its request over the winter and sends a preliminary appropriation request to the town in March. For 2026-2027 it asked for $36,385,269, having already told itself in January that the budget continues staff reductions and leaves needs unfunded, including a reading position. On May 11, 2026 the Town Council voted to hold the school increase to 3.25 per cent, cutting $146,347 from the request. A week later the committee laid off two staff. When the superintendent came back for a second round, the committee voted it down 0-5 because savings had appeared from staff leaving anyway.

Reserves and Medicaid money fill gaps
The committee moved $150,000 out of its Medicaid reimbursement account into the operating budget in March 2026 to help balance the request.
Capital work rides on gaming revenue
Building projects such as restroom renovations and bleachers were funded from town gaming revenue where the Town Council approved them, with the rest resubmitted as a capital request.
Five elected members, often split
Key votes this year were 4-1 or 3-1, and one member voted against the appropriation request, the layoffs and the high school principal's contract.
The committee did not simply pass on every cut it was handed. When the superintendent brought a second round of layoffs on May 26, 2026, it rejected them unanimously, and it also declined to cut a student services post rather than fund it properly.
