Toll Gate High School price set at $160.6 million, project $30 million over budget
What happened
On November 12, 2025 the committee approved a guaranteed maximum price of $160,573,190 for the new Toll Gate High School, adding eight extras such as outdoor sports facilities to the builder's $152,566,876 base price. The vote came with a caveat: the extras depend on money arriving later. Officials told the committee the wider two-high-school programme had a stated budget of $285 million and was about $30 million over it. By May 2026 the committee was describing an approved budget of $350 million covering both schools.
Why it matters to families
Warwick is replacing both of its high schools at once, the largest building programme in the city in more than fifty years, while the school department is under a state-approved deficit plan. Whether the athletic facilities promised to the community get built depends on money the district does not yet have in hand.
The evidence
The approved November 12, 2025 minutes record the $152,566,876 base contract, the $160,573,190 total with eight alternates, the stated $285 million budget, the $30 million overage and the funding caveat. The May 12, 2026 minutes describe both projects as on schedule within a $350 million approved budget.
