Board keeps current student phone rules for now and asks teachers for data

Day-to-day

What happened

At its September 24, 2026 study session the board discussed whether to tighten student phone rules. Staff said current rules meet state law: middle schools lock phones up during class, and high schools require them put away during instruction. A pouch system for every school was estimated at about $200,000. Members asked for teacher data before deciding.

Why it matters to families

Rules can differ from classroom to classroom. A parent asked the board in August to adopt a bell-to-bell ban, and board members disagree on whether stricter rules are needed.
