Smart devices added to school technology rules under new state law

Day-to-day

What happened

After Kansas passed a school cell phone law, the board approved the 2026-27 student handbooks on July 13, 2026 with smart devices added to every rule about technology. It also limited staff-student messaging to ParentSquare, Remind and TeamReach.

Why it matters to families

Phone and smartwatch use at school now falls under the handbook's technology rules, and families should expect school messages only through the approved apps.

The evidence

April 13, 2026 minutes note the state cell phone ban. July 13, 2026 minutes record the 7-0 vote approving the handbooks with smart devices included in technology references, and the vote naming ParentSquare, Remind and TeamReach as approved platforms under House Bill 2299.
