AI policy for schools stalls over student data protections

What happened

At the second reading of a proposed Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies Policy 6145, the School Committee took no action. A member moved to require the district to publish its list of approved student AI tools, to allow only tools that comply with FERPA, the federal student records law, and keep no student data, to tell parents promptly about any suspected or confirmed data breach, and to audit approved tools every year. The motion and the policy were sent to the Policy Subcommittee alongside the district's two internet safety policies. Nothing has been adopted.

Why it matters to families

AI tools are already in classrooms, and until a policy passes there is no published rule about which ones may be used or what happens to the information students put into them.
