Fewer students, rising costs and a new planning process
2026-27 budget adopted; longer-term changes are being developed
Beaverton School District includes Westview High School. Oregon’s State School Fund combines state aid with local revenues through a weighted student formula. A separate voter-approved local option levy supports classroom teachers, while grants and construction bonds have specific purposes. Seven elected board members set policy and adopt the budget; Superintendent Dr. Tony Smith runs district operations. Directors must live in their zone, but voters across the district elect each seat.
Enrollment has fallen for seven years
The October 2026 planning memo reports 35,351 K–12 students, excluding charters, down from 40,629 in fall 2019. Fewer students reduce funding and change how much school space is needed.
The adopted budget reduces positions
The 2026-27 budget plans about 159 fewer full-time-equivalent positions across all funds. It also adds some special-education staffing and funds a new math curriculum. FTE is a measure of staffing, not a count of people laid off. The adopted table reduces social workers from 48.5 to 37.5 FTE and counselors from 131 to 119.5; school-by-school consequences are not established here.
Reserves provide time to plan
An October memo cites nearly $168 million in reserves but projects a $42.1 million annual deficit for 2027–28 under its September forecast. Savings cannot cover recurring gaps forever.
Future school changes are not decided
Strong & Sustainable Beaverton considers budgets, programs, staffing, attendance boundaries and facilities. The framework says no additional individual school or number of closures is predetermined.
The current planning framework is not a closure list. McKay’s previously approved closure is a separate decision; future structural changes are proposed for board consideration in late 2027 and possible implementation in fall 2028.

Next: November community input, including the November 18 Westview session; later proposals and board decisions must be checked against published records.
Scheduled Westview community-input session, 6 p.m.; the plan places budget proposals in early 2027, budget approval in May–June 2027 and structural decisions in December 2027, with possible implementation in fall 2028.
