What is the district building, and how is it paid for?

A voter-approved construction and renovation project broke ground in August 2026 and is paid for with General Obligation bonds.

Breckenridge Public Schools (ISD 846) serves about 577 students in Wilkin County, Minnesota. A seven-member school board elected at large to four-year terms oversees it, and Superintendent Kristie Sullivan runs the district. Most operating money comes from Minnesota's per-pupil formula plus a local levy. The school building project is paid for by bonds that local property taxes repay, after a November 2025 special election that the board later called a referendum success.

Bonds and taxes

The 2025 payable 2026 levy is $1,819,635.96, including $559,820.51 for debt service. In September 2026 the board approved the maximum preliminary levy for 2027.

Who builds it

Architect Zerr Berg and construction manager Gertz Construction Services report to the board each month. Board member Neppl abstains on Gertz votes because of a conflict of interest.

Land

The board started condemnation of about 17 acres in February 2026, then approved a purchase agreement 5-1 in September 2026.

Rising costs

Health insurance premiums rise 15% for 2026-27, and a two-year support-staff (MSEA) contract was approved in August 2026.

The minutes show the votes but not the project's total cost, the ballot question or the bond amount. Those documents were not posted with the agendas.
