What happened

On June 9, 2026, the board adopted Policy 5340 and Regulation 5340-R. Students in grades K-8 cannot use cell phones or smart devices from the first bell to the last bell. High school students cannot use them during class time but may use them at lunch and passing periods.

Why it matters to families

This changes the school day for every student starting in 2026-27. Families who text their kids during the day will need to use the school office instead, and high schoolers will have phones only between classes and at lunch.

The evidence

The June 9, 2026 minutes record Policy 5340 passing unanimously and Regulation 5340-R passing 4-2, after a 3-3 tie on an all-day K-12 ban. An all-day K-12 version had passed first reading 4-3 on May 12.
