What happened

In July 2026 the school board voted 6-0 to ask the Board of Supervisors to put a 1% local sales tax on the ballot. The tax would be used only for school construction. The board asked for the November 2026 ballot, or a special election if that date could not be met. In September, staff said the two boards were still deciding when voters would see it. The tax could raise about $5 million a year.

Why it matters to families

The money could pay for new schools and expansions without relying only on property taxes. It cannot go to a vote unless the supervisors approve it.

The evidence

The July 13, 2026 recording shows the resolution, the 6-0 vote, and the request for a special election as a fallback. The September 14 recording says the boards are working on timing and gives the $5 million estimate.
