State awards $14.7 million toward a new elementary school and repairs

What happened
In August 2026, Virginia's Board of Education awarded Caroline County Public Schools three school construction grants, worth about $14.7 million in all. They include $9.85 million toward a new elementary school, $3.11 million for repairs and an expansion at Caroline Middle School, and $1.77 million for repairs at Madison Elementary. The school board and the county Board of Supervisors still have to accept the money and agree on next steps.
Why it matters to families
Two elementary schools are already over capacity. State money can lower the local cost of building a new school, but the county must still agree to pay its share.
The evidence
At the September 14, 2026 meeting, the chief operations officer reported that the state approved all three applications on August 27, 2026, and listed each amount. She said the next steps are school board adoption and a joint meeting with the Board of Supervisors.
