What happened

The board adopted Policy 5136 on June 1, 2026 to follow a new Indiana law. Starting in 2026-27, students must turn phones off when they arrive and keep them in their lockers all day, even at lunch and between classes. Before, phones were only banned in class. Phones found out can be taken until a parent picks them up.

Why it matters to families

This changes every student's school day, especially at the middle and high schools where phones were allowed in halls and at lunch.

The evidence

In the May 4, 2026 recording, staff describe the new state law requiring phones to be powered off and kept in lockers from arrival until students leave; the June 1, 2026 recording shows final approval of Policy 5136. Phones are allowed again after school for activities.
