District news
Fewer young students: 349 kindergartners vs. about 500 seniors

What happened
At the October 12, 2026 budget hearing, the finance officer said only 349 kindergartners were counted this fall, compared with about 500 seniors last year. The state is funding 5,774 students, and leaders expect the number to keep falling, while the online school grows. In January the count had risen to 5,829.
Why it matters to families
State money follows students, so smaller classes coming up mean less money for the district in the years ahead.
The evidence
The October 12, 2026 recording shows the enrollment slide with 349 kindergarten students and many negative numbers; the January 12, 2026 recording gives the fall 2025 count of 5,829.
