New steps for long-term suspension appeals

Day-to-day

What happened

Starting in 2026-27, a long-term suspension goes from the principal's recommendation to a Discipline Review Committee, then to the superintendent if appealed, with the school board making the final decision. A revised suspension and expulsion policy (JGD/JGE) had its second reading in September.

Why it matters to families

Families of a student facing a long suspension now go through a committee before the superintendent and board, which changes how and where they can appeal.

The evidence

In the August 10, 2026 recording, staff describe the long-term suspension procedure, saying the appeal goes before the discipline review committee, then the superintendent, with the final decision resting with the board. The September 14 agenda lists Policy JGD/JGE-R second reading.
