Nov. 3 vote on 1% sales tax for school buildings

Facilities

What happened

Voters in Greensville County and in Emporia will each decide on November 3, 2026 whether to allow an extra 1% sales tax that can only pay for school construction and major renovations. Officials said the first target would likely be renovating or replacing the 1953 high school; a new high school was estimated at about $90 million.

Why it matters to families

The money could pay for a new or rebuilt high school and other major repairs, such as Wyatt Middle's heating and cooling. Groceries and hygiene products would not be taxed. The money cannot pay salaries.

The evidence

In the October 22, 2026 joint town hall recording, the interim county administrator explains the two ballot questions and allowed uses, and the superintendent estimates a new high school would cost around $90 million.
