Who runs Lafayette County schools?

Countywide district: five elected board members and a superintendent

Lafayette County School District serves the whole county from Mayo, through Lafayette Elementary School and Lafayette High School (grades 6-12). A five-member elected School Board sets policy and adopts the budget, and Superintendent Robert Edwards runs the district and serves as the board's secretary. Most general fund money comes from the state through the Florida Education Finance Program. Local property taxes cover the required local effort (3.195 mills), a discretionary levy (0.748 mills) and capital outlay (1.5 mills). Major construction depends on the state's Special Facilities program for small counties.

Small budget, thin reserve

The 2026-27 general fund plans $12.32 million in spending against $11.45 million in revenue, with a projected $575,859 reserve at year end.

State construction funding delayed

The district ranked first for Special Facilities money due to start July 2026, but the Legislature skipped it for a year.

Open public hearings

Policy changes, textbooks, budgets and the start-time question all go through advertised hearings at 6:30 PM regular meetings. Public comment is usually light.

Collective bargaining

Teacher (LEA) and support staff (SRP) contracts run July 2025 to June 2028. TSIA raise money is bargained each year.

Most votes are unanimous, and the minutes record little debate, so how decisions were reached is often not visible in the record.
