Colorado school-finance formula, local property taxes and bond debt, with slowly falling enrollment
Mapleton Public Schools (Adams County School District No. 1) serves about 7,000 students in Thornton, Northglenn and unincorporated Adams County. Most operating money comes from Colorado's school-finance formula, which pays per funded student and combines local property tax with state aid. A five-member board elected from five director districts adopts the budget, sets policy and hires the superintendent, Mike Crawford. Board packets are organized around six focus areas, including student achievement, staff and facilities.
Enrollment
6,950 students in October 2025, down 154; funded count 6,560.5, down 122.5.
Bonds
Staff proposed refinancing about $86.46 million of 2016 and 2017 bonds to cut payments by about $11.7 million.
Budget cycle
Proposed budget in May, adoption in June, quarterly financial reports, and a December mill levy certification.
Board seats
One seat opened by resignation in 2026 and was filled by board appointment; three terms end in 2027.
Packets show plans and staff reports; they do not always record how the board voted, and per-student spending is not stated.
