Board lays off teaching staff, citing fiscal exigency

Financial

What happened

The School Committee voted unanimously to accept the superintendent's recommendation to lay off certified staff on the ground of fiscal exigency, meaning financial hardship, at the end of the 2025-2026 school year. Certified staff means teachers and other licensed educators. The number of positions and the people affected are not named in the minutes. In February the committee had removed a separate non-renewal recommendation from its agenda without voting on it.

Why it matters to families

Losing licensed teaching posts changes class sizes and what a school can offer, and this happened in the same year the district committed to a $190 million building programme.

The evidence

The May 21, 2026 approved minutes record item 5.1, the motion on the superintendent's recommendation for layoff of certified staff based on fiscal exigency as of the end of the 2025-2026 school year, and the unanimous vote. The minutes do not state how many positions were affected, and the supporting personnel document was not filed with them.
