Phones must stay off and in lockers all day, including at high school lunch

Day-to-day

What happened

On June 9, 2026, the board held the first reading of a wireless device policy that follows a new Indiana law. Students may bring phones, tablets and smartwatches to school, but the devices must be powered off and in their lockers for the whole school day. High school students, who could use phones at lunch last year, will no longer be able to.

Why it matters to families

Families who reach their children by phone during the day will need to go through the school office. There are exceptions for emergencies, medical needs, IEP or 504 plans, and translation. Students who break the rule can be disciplined, up to suspension or expulsion, and the device is returned only to a parent.

The evidence

The June 9, 2026 recording includes the full policy text (ISBA model policy 4307, Option A) read into the record, with the superintendent's explanation. The 2026-27 student handbook was updated to match.
