District proposes handing the Centredale School building back to the town
What happened
The School Committee has scheduled a vote to return care and control of 41 Angell Avenue, the Centredale School, to the Town of North Providence effective immediately, and to ask the Town Council for an ordinance change to go with it. This follows the merger of Centredale and Greystone earlier in 2026. As of the collected record this is a proposal on a meeting agenda, not a completed decision.
Why it matters to families
Giving a school building back to the town is the step that makes a closure permanent. Once the school department no longer controls the building, it cannot easily be reopened for classes.
The evidence
The August 26, 2026 meeting agenda lists new business item 10b as 'Discussion/Vote: Return care and control of 41 Angell Ave (Centredale School) back to the Town of North Providence effective immediately' and item 10c as a letter to the Town Council requesting an ordinance amending Ordinance No. 09-014. No minutes for this meeting had been filed with the state when this record was collected, so the outcome of the vote is not established.
