How Porter Township schools are paid for and who decides
Porter Township School Corporation serves about 1,576 students near Valparaiso at Porter Lakes Elementary, Boone Grove Elementary, Boone Grove Middle and Boone Grove High. Indiana pays for teaching through a per-student formula ($7,253 per student in 2026-27). Local property taxes pay for operations, buses and debt, and state tax changes (SEA 1) are shrinking that money. A five-member elected Board of School Trustees sets the budget and hires the superintendent, Dr. Stacey Schmidt.
State tax changes
The district says SEA 1 took about $600,000 from its operations fund in 2026 and $591,000 more in 2027.
Referendum vote
Voters decide on November 3, 2026 on an eight-year operating referendum of up to $3.5 million a year.
No new capital or bus money
The 2027 capital projects and bus replacement plans budget $0; building work is paid from bonds.
Three board seats
Terms for Eric McGinty, Mary Harlow and Jeannette Skibbie end December 31, 2026.
Enrollment grew from 1,509 to 1,576 students between 2024-25 and 2025-26, and the district is finishing building projects paid for by bonds.
