Budget balanced by cutting a STEM coordinator, two math interventionists and new devices

Financial

What happened

On February 26, 2026 the committee voted 5-0 to approve the FY2027 budget as a 4 percent operating increase request with a 4.13 percent capital request. To balance it, the district dropped student and teacher technology devices, curriculum materials, the proposed girls' volleyball team, and the addition of a STEM coordinator, two math interventionist positions and a new alternative learning/in-school suspension post. The interim superintendent said mandated spending was about 99 percent of the requested increase, leaving little discretionary room.

Why it matters to families

Math interventionists and a STEM coordinator are the staff who work with students who are behind. Cutting them before the town has even set its number shows how little slack the budget has.

The evidence

The February 26, 2026 approved minutes record the 5-0 vote approving the FY27 final budget with a 4 percent increase and 4.13 percent capital request, and list the reductions needed for a balanced budget: technology devices, curriculum materials, the volleyball proposal, and the elimination of the STEM coordinator, two math interventionists and the new ALP/ISS position.
