What happened

A district workgroup recommends considering a 30- to 45-minute later start for secondary students, with elementary schedules also moving later. Its two preferred options would start secondary schools at 8:15 or 8:30 a.m. and elementary schools at 9:30 or 9:45 a.m.; the Board has not decided to change the schedule.

Why it matters to families

The proposed schedules would alter daily arrival and dismissal times for families across grade levels. The options are estimated to add $1.1 million to $1.2 million in annual costs and would require resolving transportation, athletics, BOCES scheduling, and elementary childcare challenges.

The evidence

The March 11, 2026 workgroup presentation says there was general consensus to recommend 30- and 45-minute “push” scenarios. It lists annual added costs of $1.1–$1.2 million, including 8:15 a.m.–2:50 p.m. secondary and 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. elementary hours for the 30-minute option, and 8:30 a.m.–2:59 p.m. secondary and 9:45 a.m.–3:45 p.m. elementary hours for the 45-minute option. The presentation explicitly states that no decision to move to later secondary start times has been made.
