District news
Board takes up new student phone policy; phones already must stay off all day

What happened
On October 13, 2026 the board was set to hold a first reading of a new policy, BP 5131.8 Mobile Communications Devices. The 2026-27 Parent-Student Handbook already says phones must be off and kept in backpacks or lockers all school day, smart glasses are banned, and smart watches must stay in school mode, with penalties that step up from a warning to confiscation and detention.
Why it matters to families
Students cannot use phones at any time during the school day. A board policy would put these limits into district rules, as new state law requires, and could change how violations are handled.
The evidence
October 13, 2026 agenda item 7 lists "BP5131.8-Mobile Communications Devices" for first reading; the 2026-27 handbook "Cell Phones" section sets the current rules.
