New physical education standards adopted for D.C. schools

What happened
On August 19, 2026, the State Board voted 9-0 to adopt new D.C. physical education standards (SR26-12). They are based on SHAPE America's 2024 national standards and set expectations by grade span rather than by single grade.
Why it matters to families
The standards set what PE classes in every D.C. public and charter school are expected to teach. Schools will align their PE programs to them.
The evidence
The official recording of the August 19, 2026 public meeting shows the 9-0 roll-call vote adopting SR26-12. The May 6, 2026 working session recording includes OSSE's presentation of the proposed standards and public comment results.
