OSSE releases model AI policy for school staff; State Board adopts AI recommendations

What happened
At the State Board's September 16, 2026 meeting, State Superintendent Mitchell reported that on September 1 OSSE released a model AI policy for school staff. Schools can adapt it, and it uses a red/yellow/green 'stoplight' framework. Two AI training courses for educators were planned for the fall. Earlier, the board adopted SR26-6 on May 20 (an AI leadership collaborative) and SR26-10 on June 17 (recommendations on student and educator AI readiness, 7-1-1). Both are recommendations to OSSE.
Why it matters to families
Schools may use the model policy to set rules for how teachers and staff use AI tools. The board's resolutions push for statewide expectations on student AI use by grade.
The evidence
In the official recording of the September 16, 2026 public meeting, Superintendent Mitchell describes the September 1 model policy. The June 17, 2026 public meeting recording shows the 7-1-1 vote on SR26-10.
