How is Moffat County School District paid for?

State school-finance formula plus local property taxes; general fund savings are nearly spent

Moffat County School District RE-1 serves Craig and the surrounding county in northwest Colorado, with an early childhood center, four elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. A seven-member board hires the superintendent and adopts the budget. Operating money comes mostly from the state school-finance formula and local property taxes, and a bond redemption fund pays off voter-approved debt. The district has spent more than it took in for two years and has little savings left.

Savings

The general fund balance fell from $10.6 million in 2022-23 to about $2.0 million in 2025-26.

Short-term borrowing

$7.5 million borrowed for cash flow in 2025-26; $7 million expected in 2026-27.

Bond question

A bond of up to $37 million for building needs was on the November 3, 2026 ballot, using extended 2007 tax authority.

Consolidation

The board began studying scenarios to combine schools for 2027-28.

Revenue and spending after 2026-27 are not forecast in the collected records, and the bond result is not known here.
