New cultural respect policy adopted after a two-year rewrite, on a 3-2 vote

Day-to-day

What happened

On January 13, 2026 the committee adopted new policy IM.1, Cultural Respect and Inclusive Engagement, by a vote of 3 to 2. The policy commits the district to respecting cultural diversity and preventing cultural appropriation in classrooms. The committee member who presented it said the policy deliberately contains no discipline component, and that the draft had been worked on since early 2024, pulled back once and reworked after feedback from teachers and residents.

Why it matters to families

The policy sets expectations for how cultures are presented in lessons and school activities, which affects what students see in class every day.

The evidence

The January 13, 2026 approved minutes record the second read of policy IM.1, the statement that the policy has no discipline component and dates back to early 2024, and the 3-2 vote to approve.
