District news
Truancy officer's role to be expanded as the district works on chronic absenteeism
What happened
On May 19, 2026 the district's truancy officer told the committee that reaching families early is what works, that student anxiety is the most common cause she sees at the high school, and recommended more social workers, staff dedicated to family outreach and more truancy officer hours. On June 16 and June 25, 2026 the committee discussed a recommendation to expand the truancy officer post into a Student Attendance and Family Outreach Coordinator, with a new job description; the minutes record discussion of duties, hours, salary and benefits rather than a final vote.
Why it matters to families
Students who miss a lot of school fall behind, and the district's own reports track chronic absenteeism twice a year. The proposed post is aimed at the families hardest to reach.
The evidence
The May 19, 2026 approved minutes record the truancy officer's presentation, her recommendations and the discussion of barriers; the June 25, 2026 minutes record the discussion of the Student Attendance and Family Outreach Coordinator job description with no vote recorded.
