District news

Phones off during the school day starting in 2026-27

Day-to-day

What happened

On May 19, 2026 the School Committee approved new policy JICJ on cell phones and personal electronic devices, effective with the start of the 2026-2027 school year. The policy defines what counts as a personal electronic device, prohibits student use of them during school hours, sets out how devices must be stored, lists the exceptions allowed by state law, and sets the consequences for breaking the rule. Rhode Island law RIGL 16-21-43 required every district to have such a policy in place by August 2026.

Why it matters to families

This changes the ordinary school day for every student. Phones that used to be usable between classes or at lunch are now put away, and families need to know how to reach their child during the day.

The evidence

The May 19, 2026 approved minutes record the second read of policy JICJ, the motion to approve it effective with the start of the 26/27 school year, and the unanimous vote.
