North Kingstown adopts a revised student-conduct policy with a restorative, equity-focused approach

What happened
The School Committee unanimously approved revisions to the district's student-conduct policy, which had not been substantially updated since 2012. The district says the revised policy is intended to make discipline clearer, more consistent, equitable and restorative; school handbooks and practices will also need updates.
Why it matters to families
The policy guides how student conduct and discipline are handled across the district. The minutes connect the changes to recommendations from the district's Equity Audit and note that implementation will require consistent communication and updates to school handbooks and practices.
The evidence
At its October 6, 2026 meeting, the committee approved the second reading of revisions to Policy JICD, Student Conduct, unanimously 5-0. The minutes state the revisions respond to Equity Audit recommendations and aim for a clearer, more consistent, equitable and restorative approach to discipline; they also say implementation requires communication across the district and corresponding handbook and practice updates.
