OUSD proposes limits on recreational 1:1 device use

What happened

OUSD’s Board was scheduled to consider a districtwide resolution ending recreational 1:1 device use during lunch, recess, and classroom free time and directing grade-based guidelines for devices and AI by the end of 2026–27. The proposal would review instructional programs for game-like engagement loops or excessive screen use, prepare administrators for a planned reduction in 1:1 use beginning in 2027–28, and protect device access required by IEPs or Section 504 plans.

Why it matters to families

If adopted, the resolution would change when students may use district devices and affect which digital instructional programs OUSD adopts or renews. It also sets a path toward reduced 1:1 use while expressly protecting disability-related access; the agenda presents a proposal, not an adopted policy.
