OUSD proposes broader sexual-health instruction requirements

What happened
The board is scheduled to consider updating its 2004 sexual-health and HIV-prevention policy to align with California’s Healthy Youth Act. The proposed curriculum adds instruction on topics including PrEP and contraception, sexual abuse and trafficking, menstrual health, and local reproductive-health resources.
Why it matters to families
If adopted, the revised policy would set district guidance for medically accurate, inclusive instruction and cover health and safety topics that the current policy does not address; the agenda says the update has no fiscal impact. This is a proposal, not an adopted change.
The evidence
The October 28 agenda item asks the board to adopt revisions to BP/AR 6142.1, which the district says has not been updated since 2004 and is not aligned with the 2016 California Healthy Youth Act. The cover memo lists new or updated instruction on gender-inclusive content, PrEP, harassment and abuse, human trafficking, relationship violence, menstrual health, and access to local sexual and reproductive health care. Document 120078.
