OUSD seeks approval for Oakland REACH family literacy support

What happened
The Oct. 28 agenda asks the board to ratify a yearlong Oakland REACH agreement offering optional at-home reading support to students who need extra help outside school. Family coaches would explain students’ assessment data and support use of Amira reading and Zearn math; OUSD says REACH raised the funds to cover the service.
Why it matters to families
The program would extend literacy help beyond the school day and give families guidance on their children’s learning needs, supporting OUSD’s goal of ensuring strong readers by third grade. A companion data-sharing agreement would govern pupil information shared with REACH.
The evidence
The Oct. 28, 2026 board agenda describes a No-Cost Services Agreement and Data Sharing Agreement for Sept. 14, 2026–Aug. 31, 2027. It says students demonstrating a need for extra reading support outside school would be offered the opportunity to participate; REACH coaches would explain diagnostic data, provide progress updates, and encourage use of Amira, with Zearn also available for math. The agenda says REACH fundraised to pay the costs. Board action is pending.
