OUSD agenda proposes redevelopment of Sobrante Field

What happened
OUSD’s Oct. 14 agenda proposes authorizing Oakland to conditionally award Oakland United the right to redevelop and operate Sobrante Field, while district staff negotiate a sublease. The proposal would rehabilitate the 195,000-square-foot grass field, then replace it with artificial turf, lighting and other improvements; it also offers free after-school programs projected to serve 600+ students weekly.
Why it matters to families
This could substantially upgrade a public recreational field and expand youth access, but the agenda item is only a proposed conditional award: capital funding, maintenance responsibilities and field access remain subject to a future sublease that must return to the Board for approval.
The evidence
The official agenda memorandum requests approval of a conditional award letter and authority to negotiate with Oakland and Oakland United. It describes two phases of field improvements and proposed free after-school soccer/youth-development programs for 600+ students weekly, states there is no immediate OUSD fiscal impact, and says the future sublease will return to the Board before execution.
