New parental rights rules on names, pronouns and surveys

Day-to-day

What happened

The board revised its parental rights policy on June 16, 2026. Schools need written parent permission to use a name or pronoun other than a student's legal one, must notify parents within 72 hours of such requests, and need advance permission for surveys on topics such as sexuality, religion or mental health.

Why it matters to families

Parents may opt children out of material that conflicts with their beliefs, but must supply the alternative activity at no cost to the district. Parents are told before police or a school resource officer question their child, except in suspected abuse cases.

The evidence

Revised Policy #639 attached to the June 16, 2026 agenda; the June minutes record approval of the revised policies.
