How is Wiggins School District paid for?

Colorado school-finance formula plus a bond mill levy

Wiggins School District RE-50J serves the town of Wiggins in Morgan County with a preschool, primary, elementary and a middle/high school and about 820 K-12 students. Most money comes from Colorado's per-student funding formula, which mixes local property tax and state aid, so enrollment drives the budget. Voters also pay a bond mill levy (12.5 mills in 2025) for school construction debt. A five-member elected board adopts the budget and hires the superintendent; Ty Gordon took over from Dr. Trent Kerr in July 2026.

Enrollment

820 K-12 students in September 2026, 33 below the 853 the budget projected.

2026-27 budget

Adopted 5-0 on June 3, 2026 after a work session; a 3.3% pay increase was proposed in April.

Bonds

The board was to choose a bond refunding option on October 7, 2026 if it saves at least 3%.

Money lost to online schools

27 district students attend outside online schools, costing about $333,000 a year.

The agenda packets do not state the total adopted budget, so how the 33-student enrollment gap affects it is not established here.
