Weapons screening rules adopted; phone ban unchanged

Day-to-day

What happened

After a first year of weapons-detection screening at school entrances, which principals called rocky with false alarms and long lines, the board adopted a written security-screening regulation (JFG-R/KK-R) on June 15, 2026. It took no action on the state school boards association's model cell-phone policy, keeping its own stricter 'bell-to-bell' phone rule, and principals floated piloting locking phone pouches for repeat offenders.

Why it matters to families

Students and visitors pass through screening every day, and phones stay off for the whole school day.

The evidence

June 15, 2026 minutes: the board approved the security-screening regulation. Dr. Boyd: 'My recommendation based on our policy and the VSBA policy is to keep ours as is.'
