Possible 1% sales tax for school buildings

Facilities

What happened

At an August 24, 2026 joint retreat, the School Board and Board of Supervisors discussed a 2028 referendum on a 1% local sales tax for school construction, allowed by a 2026 state law (SB 66), and agreed to revisit it later this year. The superintendent later cited an estimate of about $4 million a year for school capital projects. The old Vo-Tech building is being demolished and an architect is being chosen for the site.

Why it matters to families

A sales tax would be a new way to pay for school buildings, and voters would decide it.

The evidence

August 24, 2026 joint retreat minutes: 'Both Boards agreed to table this and review it later this year.' September 21 minutes, Dr. Boyd: 'around $4 million a year to the school division for capital projects.'
