King George County Schools

How King George County schools are paid for, who decides, and what is changing, from School Board agendas, minutes and budget documents, November 2025 to October 2026.

How is the division paid for?

Mostly state aid, with about $27.8 million from the county

Like other Virginia school divisions, King George cannot tax; the county Board of Supervisors decides how much local money the schools get each spring. For 2026-27 the School Board adopted a $74.3 million budget, with $41.2 million in state aid and $27.8 million from the county. Building projects depend on the county too, which is why the two boards are discussing a 1% local sales tax for school construction that voters could decide in 2028.

State aid first

$41.2 million of the 2026-27 budget comes from the state, including about $20.7 million of state sales tax.

County share

The county appropriated $27,821,315 for 2026-27, after cutting the schools' request by $317,000.

Raises and insurance

Average raises of 5.31% and a 22.4% jump in health insurance premiums were the biggest new costs.

Buildings

A five-year capital request of about $39.3 million is led by a roughly $19 million replacement for the old Vo-Tech building.

Enrollment is falling (down about 121 students this fall), which reduces state aid even as costs rise.

Design

The old Vo-Tech building, with asbestos, lead and a failing roof, is being demolished, and the county is hiring an architect for a new two-story career center of about 30,000 square feet. The capital plan estimates about $19 million. Board members want programs in HVAC, electrical and other trades.

  1. Capital plan lists the new Vo-Tech building at $18,952,852.
  2. Demolition contract awarded.
  3. Architect selection nearing a final decision.

Funding
