What happened

LCPS is proposing a revision to Policy 8260 that says school officials may report an offense to law enforcement to protect school safety, order, or discipline, even when it is not among the policy’s listed mandatory-report categories. The Student Behavior and Accountability Committee voted to send the draft for community feedback; it has not adopted the change.

Why it matters to families

The proposal could affect when student conduct leads to a police referral; staff cited weapons, arson, and gang activity as examples of conduct that may raise safety concerns but is not on the list of mandatory reports.

The evidence

At its October 26, 2026 meeting, the committee reviewed proposed Policy 8260 language reserving LCPS’s right to report an offense to law enforcement for school safety, order, and discipline, including conduct not explicitly listed in sections A1–A7. Staff gave statutory weapons other than firearms, arson, and gang activity as examples. The committee voted to send the proposed revisions for community feedback, not to adopt them.
